A sunbeam has an almost miraculous power; it brings light, warmth and hope, whether it falls to Earth from an astronomical distance or it helps from nearby – perhaps like the civic association of the same name, which was founded by renowned paediatrician and oncologist MUDr. Pavel Boček together with friends and colleagues.
Sunbeam is the result of their many years of indomitable efforts to help children suffering from cancer and other serious diseases and children from children’s homes. Holidays by the sea are arranged for children who suffer from haemato-oncological diseases, for children who are seriously chronically ill or children who have severe somatic or psychosocial disabilities; children who are forgotten by traditional programmes organised by health insurance companies and foundations. The group also includes children growing up in children’s homes, whose chances to enjoy a holiday by the sea are also very slim. These children are selected in cooperation with the Úsměv (Smile) civic association.
Every year approximately 70 children, most often between the ages 9 to 16, go on summer curative stays. Each undergoes a tailor-made rehabilitation programme according to a specific diagnosis, but of course there is always time for having fun by the sea, a funfair, a fairytale evening, and other recreational activities.
We like these activities very much, which is why we have been working with this association for some time. This year we decided to support children in a slightly untraditional manner. We will donate CZK 1,000 to the Sunbeam civic association for every patient who undergoes an operation in our Centre during the months of July and August.
Each of you who undergo an operation at our centre will contribute to something wonderful and will light up not only your eyes but also the eyes of a child.
