One of our patients is the successful Czech Skicross team member Nikol Ku\u010derov\u00e1. She was to be seen at the Sochi as well as PyeongChang Olympics, at World Cup series as well as World Championships. Wearing glasses has proven hugely impractical for her while pursuing her sporting activities. The same was the case with contact lenses. This is why we helped Nikol in achieving sharp vision without the need for optical aids and at the same time we interviewed her to find out how she coped with the post-surgery period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nikol, could you tell us what issues did you have and how did those complicate your life?<\/b><\/p>\n

From about the age of 15 I started to wear glasses because of my short-sightedness. At first, I could not see the black-board at school properly but gradually my need for glasses became permanent. I found wearing glasses limiting, especially when practicing sports because at higher speed I was not able to focus and for example aiming with precision for the slalom poles was a challenge. This was the reason to start wearing contact lenses around the year 2006. I think I started on -0.75 and before I underwent the surgery, I was up to -3.25.<\/span><\/p>\n

You have mentioned limitations while practicing sports. Could you be more specific?<\/b><\/p>\n

Without contact lenses I would have been unable to do my sport and as such I was grateful for contacts. However, it sometimes happened that the contact lenses got stuck and I would have to blink a lot and focus on whether I am seeing properly. This stole some of my concentration and there were instances where this was border-line dangerous. Sometimes my contact lens fell out and I would have to resolve the situation out there on the slopes or in the forest while cycling. Usually I would manage to get the lens back into place, but it was rather challenging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Could you share one of your unforgettable moments?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

I have plenty of those! For example, once my lens fell out when training on a glacier while going very fast. I had no idea what to do. My coach was waiting for me for about 30 minutes and thought that I was feeling sick. One of the funniest stories was when my lens got washed out in the sea while surfing. Of course, I lost that lens and had no spares with me. I had to walk back to the camp with one eye shut because looking through a single contact lens is very unpleasant. The flowing day at took spare lenses with me, however a single wave washed out both my lenses in a one go. It took me quite some time to locate my belongings on the huge beach. I was wondering around and must have appeared pretty confused, but I simply could not see.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was the final deciding factor in choosing to go ahead with surgery?<\/b><\/p>\n

It was the surf camp last year. I found washing out the lenses annoying. I had to keep my eyes shut before every wave while paddling and while catching waves alike. Because of this I always had to surf some distance without seeing. I often found myself more focused on the contract lenses than on what I was actually supposed to be doing.\u00a0 Every time I was in the sea or the swimming pool, I found this hugely limiting. I used to look under water but with contact lenses in I had to concentrate on not opening my eyes. The other option was to wear glasses at all times. Last year during surf camp, I decided that I must get this sorted out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why did you choose the Refractive Centre Prague?<\/b><\/p>\n

I surfed the internet and searched for clinics that could help me. I read excellent reviews on Refractive Centre Prague and I had this confirmed by several people that I knew. I decided to ring RCP and the super nice and professional approach was all I need to make the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

Were you scared of anything prior to your surgery?<\/b><\/p>\n

I tried not to be scared of anything. I said to myself that thousands of people before me have been through this so why should I be scared? I was, however, nervous because of the fact that I would see the whole thing. I was somewhat worried to not overreact at any given time and perhaps jerk my body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did you perceive the whole process of the surgery? The pre-surgery examination, the post-surgery phase?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Everything came to pass without any issues what-so-ever and everything was very professional. I was pleased to realise that the examinations were really thorough. I could rest assured that the surgery was, indeed, beneficial for me and that I was suitable for it. I was explained everything in great detail, what I was to expect every step of the way, so there was nothing that took me by surprise. Everything took place as if it was not a huge deal. It did not feel like I was actually going through surgery and I was not nervous at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People are often scared of pain and of the post-surgery phase. How was this for you?<\/b><\/p>\n

The most unpleasant phase for me was within about an hour after the procedure when the medication began wearing off. It was sore, I could barely see, and I found light very bothersome. I applied the eyedrops that I was given all the time, and this helped me a lot. Within about three hours everything stabilised, I could see almost normally, and I had no more pain. I was, however, still careful and took a pain killer. I woke up the following morning with no pain. The surgery is perfectly bearable, and the results are so worth it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When we speak of your new eyes, what is the most profound change that you notice?<\/b><\/p>\n

I see much better then when I wore contact lenses.\u00a0 I am able to recognise things and read signs even at a great distance. This is something I could previously not do even with glasses. Most of all, I am so pleased every time I want to go and take out my lenses out of habit only to realise that I don`t have to. What more, waking up in the morning and seeing clearly straight away is a fantastic feeling after all these years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Have you had a chance to feel the difference even during sports?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

For the moment I am still careful with my eyes. In the sea I still wear goggles just to be on the safe side. But even so, it is great to not to have to worry about my lenses washing out. With all other sports, it is wonderful to not be limited in any way anymore and I just cannot wait to test it out at full speed on skis and on bike.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking back on your own experience, would you go through all this again?<\/b><\/p>\n

Definitely. And if I had the choice, I would have gone ahead years earlier just as soon as my vision stabilised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is there anything you would like to convey to all those that are scared of this surgery and are undecided whether to go ahead?<\/b><\/p>\n

This surgery is definitely a change for the better and the mundane everyday complications immediately disappeared. I would definitely recommend the thorough pre-surgery examination to anyone considering laser eye surgery. Once you undergo this there still is time and room to decide. The procedure as such is not painful and the healing process is fast and straight-forward. I personally believe that a visit to the dentist is often far worse and that, we have to undergo far more often.\u00a0 <\/span>????<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
