After the surgery

Home / Surgery of the Cornea / After the surgery
  • The operated eyes will be under the effect of anaesthetics immediately after the procedure. This desensitisation, however, will wear off gradually. Your eyesight will be somewhat blurry given the post-surgery swelling of your corneas.
  • On arrival home, take a painkiller and start applying eye drops immediately according to instructions provided.
  • You may perceive increased photosensitivity, scratching, burning, even pain in the operated eye (when such discomforts prevail, use another painkiller and apply artificial tears more frequently).
  • Cover your eye(s) using the bandage provided for the night. It is not necessary to apply eye drops throughout the night.
  • Do not rub your eyes under no circumstance.
  • Remove the bandage(s) the following morning, apply the eye drops and come to the clinic for your post-surgery check-up as per your appointment.
  • It is no longer necessary to cover your eyes using a bandage, however, keep applying the eye drops.
  • The healing process is often accompanied by a feeling of dry eyes (in the mornings, having worked on your computer or having spent time in an air-conditioned environment) photosensitivity, fluctuating sharpness of vision, having trouble focusing in close-up etc.

Recommended post-surgery regime

  • Protect your eyes from accidents and avoid rubbing your eyes for at least one-month post-surgery.
  • Avoid infectious, exceedingly dusty or smoky environments.
  • Avoid visiting swimming pools, saunas, solar studios for at least one-month post-surgery. We also recommend avoiding all contact sports for the same duration.
  • Washing your face carries no risk (with the exception of contaminated water). We recommend refraining from using cosmetics products (make-up, mascara) for 1–2 weeks post-surgery (mostly to avoid irritation when removing such make-up).
  • Water (possibly with suds or shampoo) may irritate the eye but will not harm it.
  • When in doubt, always take up your concerns with one of our staff. In case of emergencies (even outside working hours or on days off) our SOS help-line is here for you to make use of it at any time.
