Strabismus

Home / Eye Conditions / Strabismus

It is a problem with the parallel positioning of the eyes. It is usually caused as a result of a congenital or acquired problem with the function of the muscles responsible for moving the eyes. In each patient with this problem it is recommended to carry out a specialised strabismological examination before considering laser eye surgery or refractive lens surgery. There exists a specific link between the positioning of the eyes and dioptre errors. In some cases, the elimination of the dioptre error, could account for worsening of strabismus or even the onset of the very unpleasant double-vision (diplopy). In patients where this risk exists, it is not recommended to perform laser eye surgery or intraocular lens exchange surgery.

In some cases, it is possible to correct strabismus through surgery. Here it is essential to have a through strabismological examination as well as a thorough examination of the refractive error.
