Surgical procedure

Home / Surgery of the Cornea / Surgical procedure
  • Make yourself comfortable and ask the nurse for coffee or tea. Kindly wait to be given further instructions from one of our staff.
  • We begin the preparations by offering you a tranquiliser (Diazepam).
  • The application of anaesthetic eyedrops at regular intervals follows for the duration of about 30 minutes.
  • Remove your shoes before the surgery and put on the protective wear provided (we keep the temperature in the operating theatre at a stable temperature of 18–20 degrees Celsius. It is for this reason that we recommend warmer clothes including socks).
  • The surgery itself lasts about 10–20 minutes depending on the type of the corneal surgery.
  • After the surgery your operating surgeon will examine you using an examination microscope. After this you will be seated in the reception area where you will rest with your eyes closed.
  • The final check-up carried out by your operating surgeon will take place some 40–45 minutes after the procedure.
  • To take home with you, you will be given detailed post-surgery instructions, eye drops, painkillers and bandages for the night.
  • In case that you only had surgery of one eye, the nurse will put a bandage on this eye for your journey home. In case that you have had both eyes operated on in a single go, you will wear protective eyewear (non-dioptre sunglasses or sports eyewear) for the journey home.
