Sabina Straková, editor, author of several books, book influencer and co-founder of the project Red Crayon (Červená propiska) has recently undergone laser eye surgery at the Refractive Centre Prague. How happy is she with her sight and how did the surgery change her life?
“I was considering this surgery for a while now. I have worn glasses since the age of ten and annually my prescription got stronger and stronger. My mom too had a high prescription, and she had her surgery 20 years ago.As such I was pretty much aware that I will do the same eventually. I forever found excuses though – too much work, pregnancy, small children….”.
As soon as Sabina stopped breastfeeding her daughter, she went ahead with the surgery. To be more specific, she underwent surgery to eliminate her short-sightedness using theiDesign iLasik method. Before the surgery, Sabina had 8 dioptre and because of her children she mostly wore contact lenses. As a result of her surgery, she went down to zero and as such she could put away her glasses and contact lenses for good.
Did you know before the surgery what you are in for or were there any surprises at all?
“I had a pretty good idea. |During my initial examination the doctor and nurses explained everything thoroughly. I did some internet research too, of course. I admit to being slightly scared, naturally, this being an eye surgery. The fear and worries however, were entirely unnecessary. I was pleasantly surprised that immediately after the surgery the night was painless and there was no scratching.”
The procedure which took some 15 minutes was completely painless according to Sabina. All she felt briefly was a little bit of pressure on the eye. She could see better immediately. She spent 2 hours all in all at the Refractive Centre Prague. After this time, she could go home and the following day she could function normally with no pain to speak of and with no limitations whatsoever. This was something she praised the most being the mom of small children.
When asked whether she was scared facing the surgery she replies:“I was scared. But the staff was very sweet and pout me at easy. At the operating theatre I was even given an anti-stress ring. I found it super helpful that the doctor talked me through the whole surgery, and I was aware of what is about to happen every step of the way.”
It has now been a few months since the surgery. How are you and has your life changed since?
“Life is great. The first thing that I used to do upon waking up was to feel for my glasses. Now I wake up and I see perfectly. I also see sharper than with glasses. I really appreciate the fact that whenever I travel anywhere, I need not worry about neither glasses nor contact lenses and their casing and solution. The surgery has facilitated my life the most when caring for my children especially at night when I get up to go to them. I needn’t search for my glasses anymore. This applies to the daytime too, naturally. When I wore glasses, the children would reach for them often and my glasses were forever crooked and loose. I had to visit my optician often to get my glasses serviced. “
Sabina especially gets to enjoy her life without glasses now in the summertime. This year we went on vacation in the car, and I was super pleased I did not have to worry about removing my contact lenses at petrol stations.” Furthermore, she no longer needs to worry when diving under water.
Is there any message you would like to pass on to anyone contemplating this type of surgery?
“If you are undecided or reluctant, don`t be, Go for it. It is definitely worth it. I only regret not having done it sooner.”
