Intraocular Refractive Surgery
Intraocular Refractive Surgery
Two types of surgeries are currently referred to as intraocular refractive surgery in current modern medicine. The first one being refractive lens extraction and the other one the implantation of a phakic intraocular lens.
In the first case we extract the natural lens from within the eye and replace it using either a mono or multifocal artificial lens. Extracting the lens is directly linked to the loss of accommodation (the ability of the eye to focus at various distances) and as such it is suitable only in patients in the presbyopic age (after the age of 40). On the other hand, the principle of implanting a phakic lens lies in implanting a lens that will support the dioptric condition of the eye depending on the dioptre error while at the same time maintaining the natural lens and thereby the natural ability to accommodate. This is why this method is most suitable for younger patients who may not be suitable for laser eye surgery.
