Personal Life

“I come from a doctor’s family, where medical studies were a natural thing. Why did I choose Ophthalmology? My grandfather, Dr Jiří Jirman founded the Ophthalmological Department at the Na Bulovce Hospital and wrote the very first Czech Ophthalmology textbook. My father, Dr Karel Blažek was the head of the Ophthalmological Department at the Děčín and Jindřichův Hradec Hospitals for many years. He was a fantastic eye surgeon and it was him who introduced me to the micro-surgery at the Jindřichův Hradec Hospital. I gained further expertise under the guidance of professor Kuchynka at the Eye Clinic of the FNKV hospital in Prague where I worked for 13 years. Here, I worked as the Head of the Refractive Centre as well as the Head of the wards and operating theatres. Since 2007 I work at the Na Homolce Hospital and at the Refractive Center Prague. I perceive eye micro-surgery as my life’s calling and the love of my life all in one.”

About herself

“Pushing through as a woman in male dominated field was not at all easy. I took it as a personal challenge and reached my goals not only thanks to my effort and will-power but also thanks to the background and unconditional support provided by my large family. I am once married, mother of three and this year I became a grandmother for the very first time. I choose to spend all my free time with those closest to me who are, at the same time, the source of my motivation. We love sports, mountains, the ocean and nature where we seek to replenish our energy.”

About her work

“I believe Ophthalmology to be one of the most beautiful fields in human medicine. The results of our work can often be observed immediately and being a part of that is exciting and joyful at the same time. I am thankful that when choosing my field, genetics must have obviously played a role as I feel predestined for microsurgery of the eye.”
