Cataract
Cataract
Cataract is the clouding over of the eye’s natural lens that lies behind the iris and pupil.
Cataract is the most common factor causing the loss of sight in patients older than 40 and is the greatest factor causing blindness in the world. In reality, more cases of cataract exist in the world than glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined.
The only effective solution is surgery. Cataract surgery is, quite possibly, the most effective surgical procedure in all of medicine. To this date, no effective conservative method has been discovered to prevent the onset of cataract and its progression in an otherwise healthy adult eye.
Risk factors in the onset and development of cataract are external effects. Namely UV-B radiation, smoking, using some medication or alcohol. Cataract develops also in patients with some types of metabolic diseases (for example diabetes), after intraocular surgeries, with some eye diseases and after traumatic injuries. Cataract, however, usually develops in connection with ageing.
